Foods for Thyroid Health

Thyroid manages metabolism. Hypothyroidism (slow, weight gain) and hyperthyroidism (fast, weight loss) — two extremes. Iodine, selenium, zinc, vitamin D and B12 are critical.

For Hypothyroidism

Adequate iodine (iodized salt, seafood), selenium (Brazil nuts), zinc, vitamin D. Avoid very-low-calorie diets — thyroid hormone drops further. Adequate protein (kg × 1-1.2 g).

For Hyperthyroidism

Iodine restriction (limit seafood, switch to non-iodized salt). Selenium (Graves' disease — lowers antibodies). Higher calorie intake — counters rapid weight loss. Limited caffeine.

Goitrogens

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower — raw can interfere with iodine absorption. Cooking reduces 85%. Hypothyroid can have 2-3 cooked portions/week.

Frequently Asked Questions
